    Black History Month Spotlight

    Dr. James West

In 1960, while working at Bell Laboratories, Dr. West teamed up with fellow scientist Gerhard M. Sessler to develop an inexpensive, highly sensitive, compact microphone. In 1962, they finished development on the product, which relied on their invention of electret transducers. By 1968, the electret microphone was in mass production. West’s and Sessler’s invention became the industry standard, and today, 90 percent of all contemporary microphones — including the ones found in telephones, tape recorders, camcorders, baby monitors and hearing aids — use their technology.

Please join us in welcoming National Inventors Hall of Fame inductee, Dr. James West, to our school TODAY to speak with our students! We’ll disc

As we continue to celebrate Black History Month, let us consider the history made by inventors.  JAMES WEST is just one of the American inventors who have made life easier for everyone.  He holds over 250 foreign and U.S. patents for the production and design of microphones; including the ones found in our cellphones, laptops, baby monitors and hearing aids.  As a young boy he was always interested in how things worked.  That curiosity led him to study and work in laboratories to contribute to many innovations in the way we communicate.

Next Tuesday starting at 10:45 a.m. during 4th  period, please plan to welcome DR. JAMES WEST to SCS and be inspired by the knowledge of his inventions.

    Black History Month Spotlight

    Marie Van Brittan Brown

Did you know that the first home security system was invented by a Black nurse? Although she was a full-time nurse, she recognized the security threats to her home and devised a system that would alert her of strangers at her door and contact relevant authorities as quickly as possible.

Her original invention consisted of peepholes, a camera, monitors, and a two-way microphone. The finishing touch was an alarm button that, when pressed, would immediately contact the police. Her patent laid the groundwork for the modern closed-circuit television system that is widely used for surveillance, home security systems, push-button alarm triggers, crime prevention, and traffic monitoring.

Good Evening SCS 8th Grade Families,

I am calling this evening to remind you about an incredible opportunity Monday, February 15. DPS is hosting an AP (Advanced Placement) Information Session for rising 9th graders Monday from 6:15–7:30. This event is for ALL rising 9th grade students. You’ll hear information about why you should take AP courses in high school and you’ll have time to talk with individual high schools (including us) about AP programs and DPS Content Specialists about four-year pathways. We’d like all students and families to receive this information so you can make informed decisions when selecting courses for next year and beyond! The schedule & registration information are posted in the robo email and will be available on my blog.

    Have a good evening.
