As we continue to celebrate Black History Month, let us consider the history made by inventors. JAMES WEST is just one of the American inventors who have made life easier for everyone. He holds over 250 foreign and U.S. patents for the production and design of microphones; including the ones found in our cellphones, laptops, baby monitors and hearing aids. As a young boy he was always interested in how things worked. That curiosity led him to study and work in laboratories to contribute to many innovations in the way we communicate.
Next Tuesday during 4th period, please plan to welcome DR. JAMES WEST to SCS and be inspired by the knowledge of his inventions.

Dr. Henry Thomas Sampson Jr.
Dr. Sampson is the first Black person to earn a Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering.
On July 6, 1971, Sampson was awarded a patent with George H. Miley for the invention of the gamma-electric cell, a direct-conversion energy device that converts the energy generated from the radiation of high-energy gamma rays into electricity.
Other patents include a binder system for rocket propellants and explosives and a case-bonding system for cast-composite rocket propellants, both related to the manufacturing and production of solid-propellant rocket motors.

Black History Month Spotlight
Nikki Giovanni
Nikki Giovanni is one of America’s foremost poets. Over the course of her career, Giovanni has published numerous collections of poetry—from her first self-published volume Black Feeling Black Talk (1968) to New York Times best-seller Bicycles: Love Poems (2009)—several works of nonfiction and children’s literature, and multiple recordings, including the Emmy-award nominated The Nikki Giovanni Poetry Collection (2004). A frequent lecturer and reader, Giovanni has taught at Rutgers University, Ohio State University, and Virginia Tech, where she is a University Distinguished Professor.
Giovanni’s first published volumes of poetry grew out of her response to the assassinations of such figures as Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, Medgar Evers, and Robert Kennedy, and the pressing need she saw to raise awareness of the plight and the rights of Black people. Black Feeling Black Talk (1968) and Black Judgement (1968) explore Giovanni’s growing political and spiritual awareness. These early books, followed by Re: Creation (1970), quickly established Giovanni as a prominent new voice in African American literature. Black Feeling Black Talk sold over ten thousand copies in its first year alone.
Giovanni has received numerous awards and accolades for her work including seven NAACP Image Awards, the Langston Hughes Award for Distinguished Contributions to Arts and Letters, the Rosa Parks Women of Courage Award and over twenty honorary degrees from colleges and universities around the country.

Black History Month Spotlight
Garrett Morgan
Do you appreciate having a yellow light to warn you that the traffic signal will soon be red? Yep, think about all the collisions that would happen if the light went straight from Green to Red. You have Garrett Morgan to thank for that – the inventor of the three-way traffic signal. Morgan witnessed many collisions at intersections where there were no warnings given by the era’s two-way stop and go signals. His patent for the three-way signal was sold to General Electric and was the inspiration for the modern day Red, Yellow, and Green traffic lights that we rely upon today.
Morgan created many inventions, including one for a face mask that served as the precursor for gas masks used in WWII.

ACT Survey/Information for Juniors & Seniors–Time Sensitive
Good evening SCS Families. This is Ms. Price with an important message for our juniors and seniors.
You recently received a message from our district regarding the requirement for eligible 11th graders to take the state-sponsored ACT college readiness assessment. This opportunity is also available for students who missed the ACT administration as an 11th grader in 2020. Students can take this administration of the ACT free of charge. The scores students receive on the ACT can be reported for free to up to 4 colleges or universities.
We are required to give the ACT face-to-face here at school. Our testing team is working on all of the details of our testing plan to ensure we provide the safest testing environment possible while maintaining test security. We will require students and staff to be screened, maintain safe distances, wear masks, and keep our testing rooms and materials clean and disinfected.
All students will be provided breakfast and lunch on their test days. The test will be given using the online format. Students will be assigned a specific date within the 6-day testing window (February 23-25, March 2-4) to take their test. Last week, we shared a survey link with students and families. All students need to complete the survey so they can provide their communication preference for receiving their assigned test date and to request transportation. The survey must be completed by February 9th.
We will communicate assigned test dates starting February 10th. We will communicate transportation information starting February 16th. Make-up test dates will be March 16-18. In the meantime, if you have any questions please reach out to (List contact here).
We thank you for your trust and confidence. Have a good evening.

Weekly Message–February 8-12, 2021
Good Evening SCS Families. This is Ms. Price with your Weekly Message for the week of February 8.
Continuing Monday, our individualized intervention groups for Advisory 7th period will meet. We had some tech issues getting everyone connected last week. I’d like to thank Ms. Bridges and the teachers for working so quickly to readjust and for the students who showed up to their groups, remained in communication with their teachers, and had a productive intervention period. Middle school students will remain in their normal 7th period classes. High school students have received links via email so they know where to go for 7th period. These sessions are not optional, so please discuss with your child their invitations and let them know how important their attendance is. We will remain in these groups for two more weeks, look at the data we have gathered, and determine whether to continue. Juniors will focus on ACT Prep, other grade levels will work on iReady, Reading Plus and/or Vocabulary.com activities.
Tuesday-Friday, high school students will attend their regularly scheduled 7th period class.

Gryphons, during Black History Month there are a lot of exciting virtual events to explore. Keep an eye on our SCS calendar for Zoom links to lectures, tours and exhibits that will enlighten you about some facts and events you may never have heard of. This calendar will be updated all month, so don’t miss out. Many of these events are accessible to the public and are held during the evenings, so we hope that you will enjoy these with your families.
One of our students and his family have experienced a devastating tragedy…a house fire. Thankfully, all family members are safe but they lost all of their belongings. We would like to support them during this difficult time. If you would like to donate, you may donate to the Go Fund Me account
https://au.gofundme.com/f/noel-fire-fund
If you would prefer to donate directly to the school, please contact me and I will ensure that the funds get to the family. Thank you in advance for your support.
Have a good evening from all of us at SCS where we practice the 4 C’s – Creativity, Communication, Collaboration, and Community.
