Criteria for Scholarship 

For Students with Special Needs

 Submit documentation indicating enrollment and/or acceptance in an accredited college, university or post-secondary career school.

  1. Submit two (2) sealed letters of recommendation:  one must be from the school on letterhead and signed by a teacher, counselor, principal, advisor, or department chair.
  2. Submit signed documentation from the leader of the organization/program verifying community service/volunteer service.
  3. Submit signed documentation from the leader indicating participation in extracurricular activities such as drama, sports, etc.
  4. Submit the signed parental consent form verifying the presence of an intellectual or learning disability.  
  5. Submit a typed paragraph (200-250 words) regarding future educational goals and objectives and how this scholarship will help to support those goals.
  6. Submit official transcript with school seal verifying at least an unweighted GPA of 2.5.
  7. Submit documents verifying memberships, activities, and honors.
  8. Submit a 3×5 inch photo which may be used for Sorority and media publications.
  9. Submit completed application packet to the local chapter before April 30, 2021

HackED 2021 PRESENTED BY AUDACITY LABS AND REV 
Please invite your students  to join Audacity Labs and Rev for a no-coding hackathon full of problem-solving, community, and fun! Students may register ASAP using this link: https://al-hack-ed.devpost.com/  Questions should be addressed to Quinci King <quinci@audacitylabs.org

  • What: A free, virtual, no-code, ideation hackathon presented by Audacity Labs and Rev, in which students can generate a meaningful and innovative idea, learn from industry experts, and develop a concise pitch to present their solution.  Over the course of the two-day event, students will be provided a framework to leverage artificial intelligence technologies– utilizing Honeycode– to solve a problem within the Education sector. Students will work in teams to develop their solution and submit a proposal.
  • Who: North Carolina High School Students 
  • When: February 12-14, 2021 | 5 pm Est Start
  • Where: Virtual! 
  • Why:  Each participant receives a $10 Amazon gift card,  a Google Cardboard Headset and free food just for registering and participating! For each student you (a student) refer, you will earn an additional $5 of Amazon gift cards. Prizes include $1000 (first place), $500 (second place), $250 (third place). The top 5 teams will be invited to join Rev Accelerator for continued venture support.

 DPSF YOUTH ADVISORY COUNCIL OPENINGS

The Durham Public Schools Foundation (DPSF) is excited to announce open recruitment for the DPSF Youth Advisory Council. All DPS students grades 8th through 12th grades are eligible to apply. The Youth Advisory council will give students experience to develop their leadership and learn about how to impact change in their schools and communities. Students who participate in the council will receive a $200 stipend for their time. Activities will remain virtual during the COVID-19 pandemic. The DPSF Youth Advisory Council has the following goals for this calendar year:

1) Plan and execute the second annual Durham Youth Equity Summit

2) Build a Youth to Youth COVID Support Program

3) Advocate for increased youth leadership and engagement in Durham Public Schools

Black History Month Spotlight

Dr. Shirley Jackson

Jackson is currently the president of the prestigious Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. 

She is a theoretical physicist and held senior leadership positions in academia, government, industry, and research.

She has a B.S. in Physics and a Ph.D. in Theoretical Elementary Particle Physics, both from MIT.

She is the first African American woman to receive a doctorate from MIT, and the first African American woman to serve as president at a top-ranked research university.

Jackson pioneered the technology that gave way to the Call Waiting and Caller ID phone features, the portable fax machine, and the touch tone telephone.

Essay instructions:  Applicants are required to submit a typed narrative essay explaining “why are you deserving of this scholarship and how will this scholarship assist you in achieving your goals.”  The essay is an important part of the selection process. Essay must be double-spaced, 12 point, Times New Roman font, 1 page maximum, and one-inch margin on all sides.

Duke Research in Engineering Progra

DukeREP is a 7-week summer research program for rising juniors and seniors. This year it will be held virtually. Students will learn about research concepts and remotely engage in experiments. 

Program Goals: 

• Gain exposure to academic research  

• Learn experimental design and data analysis  

• Explore careers in science and engineering  

• Prepare for college applications 

Program Information:  

• Program Dates: June 14th, 2021 to July 30th, 2021  

• Students will participate weekdays from 9 am to 2 pm  

• No cost to apply or attend  

• Students will compose a final research report and presentation  

• Students will workshop their college essays and resume  

• Students will attend talks by professors and graduate students

• Application deadline: March 25th, 2021

UNC-Chapel Hill is offering a paid opportunity for Summer of 2021 with the Internship in Science and Health Training and Research (ISHTaR) for students interested in working with research teams with the Department of Emergency Medicine, shadowing physicians and nurses across the hospital, as well as shadowing EMS providers.  This opportunity is currently a virtual internship.  If you are interested, please contact Mrs. Settle for application information.  Applications are due by March 12, 2021.
