Established in 2011, the Lawrence and Artelia Perry Scholarship Fund is a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to providing scholarships for students at Bennett College, Livingstone College, and North Carolina Central University. Women’s History Month Spotlight Shines On…

 Sarah Thomas was the first woman to officiate a Super Bowl this year when the Kansas City Chiefs played the Tampa Bay Bucaneers. Ms. Thomas was an avid athlete growing up, having lettered five times in softball and attending the University of Mobile on a basketball scholarship where she became an All-American. Ms. Thomas started officiating grade school and high school football games, rising through the ranks as a college football official, joining the “Conference USA Staff: in 2006 and subsequently officiating a major college football game, becoming the first woman to do so in 2007. In 2015, Sarah Thomas became a full-time official, officiating playoff games and being the first woman to accomplish this feat as well! As a result of Ms. Thomas becoming the first woman to officiate a Super Bowl this year, the NFL altered the position of “Head Linesman” to become “Down Judge” in order to be a more gender-neutral term as well as to encourage more women to pursue officiating!

DUKE UNIVERSITY NEUROSCIENCE EXPERIENCE FOR RISING JUNIORS AND SENIORS
The Duke University Neuroscience Experience (DUNE) is an 8-week summer research program for rising high school juniors and seniors in the Research Triangle area. Our mission is to make science more accessible to outstanding students from a broad range of backgrounds and experiences to foster a dynamic and creative scientific community. Students will be matched with participating labs based on research interests and will have an opportunity to participate in real, ongoing research under the mentorship of volunteer graduate students and/or postdoctoral fellows within the Neurobiology and Psychology & Neuroscience departments. In addition to research experience students will also participate in professional development activities including college advising, scientific communication workshops, and career sessions. The program is a full-time commitment and will come with a $2460 stipend. DukeREP is a 7-week summer research program for rising juniors and seniors. This year it will be held virtually. Students will learn about research concepts and remotely engage in experiments.

Black History Month Spotlight

Philip Emeagwali

Due to cost, Philip Emeagwali was forced to drop out of school at age 14 because his father could not continue to pay his school fees. His father continued to teach him at home and Emeagwali received scholarships to attend college, eventually receiving three master’s degrees in engineering and mathematics. As an adult, Emeagwali began studying nature, specifically bees. He saw an inherent efficiency in the way bees construct honeycombs and determined that computers that emulate this process could be the most efficient and powerful. In 1989, he put this idea to work, using 65,000 processors to invent the world’s first supercomputer — able to perform 3.1 billion calculations per second.

The Durham Bulls announced this week that there will be a 2021 Durham Bulls Baseball season. Due to COVID-19, we will not be holding an open house however are now accepting online applications.

The Durham Bulls Explorer Post 50 is a co-ed unpaid internship program that offers students, ages 14-20, a unique and invaluable opportunity to gain exceptional experience in the field of television broadcasting. Durham Bulls Explorer Post 50 is supported and sponsored by the Durham Bulls, Fox 50, and Capitol Broadcasting Company. Now in our 23rd season of broadcasting, Post 50 provides the live broadcast of the Durham Bulls games on MeTV, MiLB.com as well as within the ballpark. We also provide highlights for FOX 50 and WRAL newscasts.

Applications are now being accepted for the 2021 Durham Bulls season.  If you have students interested in being a part of the TV Crew, please have them complete the 2021 Online Application.  Applications are due by Sunday, Feb. 28th, 2021, and must be completed to be considered for membership. We will be limiting the crew to 70 members.

Phone Interviews – Required for all applicants, new and returning members.  Interviews will be scheduled via email at a later date.

The Durham Bulls announced this week that there will be a 2021 Durham Bulls Baseball season. Due to COVID-19, we will not be holding an open house however are now accepting online applications.

The Durham Bulls Explorer Post 50 is a co-ed unpaid internship program that offers students, ages 14-20, a unique and invaluable opportunity to gain exceptional experience in the field of television broadcasting. Durham Bulls Explorer Post 50 is supported and sponsored by the Durham Bulls, Fox 50, and Capitol Broadcasting Company. Now in our 23rd season of broadcasting, Post 50 provides the live broadcast of the Durham Bulls games on MeTV, MiLB.com as well as within the ballpark. We also provide highlights for FOX 50 and WRAL newscasts.

Applications are now being accepted for the 2021 Durham Bulls season.  If you have students interested in being a part of the TV Crew, please have them complete the 2021 Online Application.  Applications are due by Sunday, Feb. 28th, 2021, and must be completed to be considered for membership. We will be limiting the crew to 70 members.

Phone Interviews – Required for all applicants, new and returning members.  Interviews will be scheduled via email at a later date.

Training Sessions – Required to attend one training session.  More details will be sent before the start of the 2021 baseball season.

Acceptance into the program – Notifications will be sent in late March.

Regular baseball season runs from Apr. 6 – Sept. 12, 2021.

 The American Association of Blacks in Energy (AABE) is a national association of energy professionals founded and dedicated to ensuring African Americans and other minorities have an input in the energy industry.  Through its Scholarship Program, AABE  seeks to help increase the number of African Americans, Hispanics and Native Americans (underrepresented minorities) in energy related fields.  By doing so, we help our nation address a critical need and a challenge to our future economic vitality in the world market.

The NC Chapter of AABE  will award a $1,000 scholarship to high school seniors with a proven strong academic performance. Scholarship recipients may be nominated to the National Scholarship Committee for consideration of the regional and national awards. DUKE UNIVERSITY NEUROSCIENCE EXPERIENCE FOR RISING JUNIORS AND SENIORS
The Duke University Neuroscience Experience (DUNE) is an 8-week summer research program for rising high school juniors and seniors in the Research Triangle area. Our mission is to make science more accessible to outstanding students from a broad range of backgrounds and experiences to foster a dynamic and creative scientific community. Students will be matched with participating labs based on research interests and will have an opportunity to participate in real, ongoing research under the mentorship of volunteer graduate students and/or postdoctoral fellows within the Neurobiology and Psychology & Neuroscience departments. In addition to research experience students will also participate in professional development activities including college advising, scientific communication workshops, and career sessions. The program is a full-time commitment and will come with a $2460 stipend. 6.            Submit official transcript with school seal verifying at least an unweighted GPA of 2.5.

Black History Month Spotlight

Alexander Miles

Before Alexander Miles invented a system for elevator doors to open and close automatically, it was up to people—either the riders themselves or an operator—to make sure the car and shaft doors were secure. And guess what? People would forget, and accidents ensued.

Miles saw the potential for danger when riding in an elevator with his young daughter, so he devised a system wherein an elevator’s doors could open and close on their own, eliminating the hazard of human error. His design made it so the cage of the elevator car would trigger a mechanism that would close the door to the shaft on its own.

And, after moving to Chicago in 1899, he founded The United Brotherhood, a life insurance company that catered to an African-American population that wasn’t always guaranteed coverage by other companies in the market.
