    Good Evening SCS Families. This is Ms. Price with your weekly message for March 14, 2022. 

    COVID Update 

    This week SCS reported 0 positive COVID cases, 0 close contacts were identified, and there were 0 class closures. Communication to families whose students were identified as close contacts has been completed. If you have not already been personally contacted, it means your student was NOT in close contact with any of the COVID-19 cases. 

    Power School Parent Portal Accounts 

    Parents, we will be available in the office during the break if you need assistance with getting your PowerSchool Parent Portal account activated.  Remember that you can access 3rd Quarter report cards via the Portal in April. 

    Fundraiser Car Show

    Make sure you mark your calendar for the Rev’ved Up for Kids Car Show Fundraiser sponsored by one of our community partners, New American Funding,  April 9 at 10:oo a.m.  This event is free to visitors.  Refreshments will be on sale. Please come out and view all of the rare and exotic cars that will be on display. All proceeds will benefit SCS. 

    Intersession Dates 

    Students are now officially on Intersession Break through April 1. Students return to school on April 4.  Be safe and productive during this time and we’ll look forward to seeing you back in April! I will send the next weekly message on April 3.

    High School and 8th grade students: SCS will host our FIRST Annual Career Fair here on campus on April 12. We will have several vendors providing information from many different career fields. This is a first come first serve event and you must sign up with Ms. Settle to attend.

    Seniors who are planning to go directly into the workforce after graduation, please plan to attend Durham Public Schools’ Hiring Fair specifically for Graduating Seniors on April 19. We will provide transportation and you will work with Ms. Evans to prepare your resume. We only have space for 15 students. See Ms. Settle to sign up!

    UNC-Greensboro CHANCE College Readiness Opportunity is now accepting applications for all current Hispanic and Latinx students in the 11th grade. This is an opportunity to experience college life! You must apply by April 16 and application information can be found on Ms. Settle’s website.

    ****************   National School Social Work Week is this week and celebrates school social workers across the country as it highlights their vital role in helping students meet academic, social, and emotional challenges.  We recognize our social worker, Mr. White, for all he does for our school.

    The Durham Soil and Water Conservation District will be sponsoring a high school student to attend the 2022 NC Resource Conservation Workshop (RCW): This is an Overnight camp for high school students interested in conservation and natural resources. Students will spend the week at NCSU learning about a wide range of conservation areas of study for college and careers after graduation.  Interested students should fill out an official application and return to the Durham SWCD office by 5 pm Wednesday, April 27, 2022, or email them to Lisa Marochak lmarochak@dconc.gov.   Please see the brochure or video for more information.

    UNC School of Medicine is offering a summer internship with their department of Emergency Medicine. Students must be 16 years old by June 13 and able to work between 20-40 hours a week. To get application information please visit Ms. Settle’s website. All applications must be submitted by March 18.

    There will be a mandatory Senior Class meeting Tuesday, March 8 at 11:30 a.m. We will meet in the Cybrary. It is very important that all Seniors attend this meeting.

    DPS is still requiring mask-wearing and social distancing. Please make sure that you are wearing your mask indoors at all times and outdoors if you cannot be more than 6 ft. apart. On Monday, Durham City and County have discontinued the mask mandate. This does not apply to Durham Public Schools.

    GALS is a free summer science program for high school students to learn science hands-on while backpacking through the wilderness.     In reviewing the essays, the scholarship committee will consider the following criteria in selecting recipients:  Creativity; Correct use of grammar and punctuation; Ability to relate to founding principles of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. – Scholarship, Service, Sisterhood, and Finer Womanhood; Adherence to topic; Cohesiveness of work

    Your student may come to school unless they are feeling sick or exhibiting any symptoms of COVID-19. Please know we continue to take all precautions necessary to protect the health and safety of our students and staff. Thank you. 

    Early Release Day

    Please mark your calendars for Wednesday, March 9 which is an Early Release Day. Students will be dismissed at 2:00 p.m. There will be no afterschool activities on this date.

    2022-2023 Class Registration

    We will begin registration for next school year the week of March 7! Students will meet with counselors at the following times to complete their registration tasks. 

    • March 7 -Rising Seniors Registration @ 10AM
    • March 7–Rising 7th graders (in core classes) 
    • March 8 – Rising Juniors Registration @ 10AM
    • March 8–Rising 8th graders (in enrichment classes) 
    • March 9- Rising Sophomores Registration @ 10AM

    Routine Drills 

    I’d like to remind you that we hold routine drills throughout the year to practice for various safety situations. These drills include fire drills, lockdown drills, tornado drills,  and earthquake drills even when there is no active situation at our school. We hold these drills to ensure that everyone knows what to do in the event of an emergency. Please speak with your students about the importance of these drills and their participation. This week we will have a Statewide Tornado Drill on Wednesday.

You may contact any of your child’s teachers, any administrator, or the office and we will be happy to assist you. If you do not have your account set up, we will be contacting you to get that done. You are able to access your child’s attendance, assignments, and grades through the Portal account. It is an invaluable resource to you in communicating with us about your child’s progress. 

    End of Qtr./Intersession Dates 

    The quarter ends on Friday, March 11. Intersession Break for students is March 14- April 1. Students return to school on April 4. Make sure that you are aware of all deadlines and are working diligently to finish the quarter strong.

    COVID Testing for Students 

    I’d like to remind you that Durham Public Schools, in partnership with MAKO Medical, is providing weekly COVID-19 testing at our school each Tuesday to help identify possible COVID-19 infections among students even if they’re not showing any symptoms. Research has shown such testing can reduce the spread by 50%, especially in large settings such as schools.

    This is a voluntary testing process, so a parent or guardian must register their student to participate. The link to register is included in the email version of this message, posted on our website and my blog. All testing information and results will remain confidential. 

    I encourage our families to register their students for this free opportunity. Together, we can keep our students safe, in their classrooms, and prevent community spread.

The Smithsonian Institution is sponsoring a series of events all month that tell women’s stories and honor their achievements in art, history, science, business and culture. Today’s event imagines how our lived experiences would be transformed and what changes could we see in society if we prioritize the inclusion of female-led perspectives in the world of media?

    Please complete the online application (link above) AND submit the following additional documents to scholarships@zphibdurhamnc.org no later than April 1, 2022.

    • Applicants are required to submit a high school transcript.
    • Applicants are required to submit two letters of recommendation.
    • Applicants are required to submit an essay (instructions are below).  

    Essay instructions:  Applicants are required to submit a typed narrative essay explaining “why are you deserving of this scholarship and how will this scholarship assist you in achieving your goals.”  The essay is an important part of the selection process. Essay must be double-spaced, 12 point, Times New Roman font, 1 page maximum, and one-inch margin on all sides. 

    In reviewing the essays, the scholarship committee will consider the following criteria in selecting recipients:  Creativity; Correct use of grammar and punctuation; Ability to relate to founding principles of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. – Scholarship, Service, Sisterhood, and Finer Womanhood; Adherence to topic; Cohesiveness of work

    DEADLINE:  Scholarship applications AND additional documents must be submitted no later than April 1, 2022. Late and incomplete applications will not be considered.

    All Seniors & Juniors that are planning on attending prom or purchase tickets need to see Ms. Street to get your mandatory waiver form that must signed and filed with the school.  These forms are due by May 4th but do not wait.

    National Honor Society tutors to the rescue!

    Honor Society students will be available to tutor in a variety of topics starting Wednesday, February 2nd, and moving forward weekly on Mondays and Wednesdays during lunch and after school in the cafeteria student lounge.
