Message from Nurse Donahue
***Letter & Form are available on the website!
Hello, SCS families!
Spring is finally here, and with the Spring weather many students experience allergy and asthma symptoms.
If your student has a history of seasonal allergies or asthma that are worse during Spring weather, please reach out to your pediatrician for a school note! Allergy symptoms, such as a headache, runny nose and congestion and asthma symptoms like coughing and shortness of breath, are symptoms that also can be experienced with a COVID-19 infection.
Students who are having COVID-19 symptoms must be sent home from school and they must have a negative COVID test and be symptom free for 24 hours before returning to school. However, if your child has a history of these symptoms, you can have your pediatrician write a note that would let them stay in school and avoid COVID testing.
Example note from pediatrician:
Student XYZ has a history of headache, runny nose, and congestion during weather changes. If she has a headache, runny nose, and/or congestion and no other symptoms (fever, body aches) she does not need to be COVID tested or sent home from school.
Many families can request the note by calling their pediatrician’s nurse line or sending a request through My UNC Chart/Duke My Chart.
If your child has asthma that is worse in the Spring and does not have an inhaler at school, please consider having the attached medication form filled out by your provider, add the parent signature, and drop the inhaler off at school with your student. You also have the option of sending allergy or headache medicine to school for your child using the same form and the steps listed above. Even over the counter (OTC) medicine needs a doctor’s order.
If you have any questions, I can be reached by call or text at 919-667-5544 or hannah_donahue@dpsnc.net
Thank you! In good health,
Nurse Hannah
Hannah Donahue, BSN, RN – Senior Public Health Nurse
Have a great evening from all of us at SCS where we practice the 4C’s–Creativity, Communication, Collaboration, and Community.
