National School Social Work Week is this week and celebrates school social workers across the country as it highlights their vital role in helping students meet academic, social, and emotional challenges.  We recognize our social worker, Mr. White, for all he does for our school.

The Durham Soil and Water Conservation District will be sponsoring a high school student to attend the 2022 NC Resource Conservation Workshop (RCW): This is an Overnight camp for high school students interested in conservation and natural resources. Students will spend the week at NCSU learning about a wide range of conservation areas of study for college and careers after graduation.  Interested students should fill out an official application and return to the Durham SWCD office by 5 pm Wednesday, April 27, 2022, or email them to Lisa Marochak lmarochak@dconc.gov.   Please see the brochure or video for more information.

UNC School of Medicine is offering a summer internship with their department of Emergency Medicine. Students must be 16 years old by June 13 and able to work between 20-40 hours a week. There will be a mandatory Senior Class meeting Tuesday, March 8 at 11:30 a.m. We will meet in the Cybrary. It is very important that all Seniors attend this meeting.

DPS is still requiring mask-wearing and social distancing. Please make sure that you are wearing your mask indoors at all times and outdoors if you cannot be more than 6 ft. apart. On Monday, Durham City and County have discontinued the mask mandate. This does not apply to Durham Public Schools.

GALS is a free summer science program for high school students to learn science hands-on while backpacking through the wilderness. The Eta Beta Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. in Durham North Carolina presents its Annual Scholarship.  Please distribute this scholarship opportunity to graduating seniors.  Awards range from $500-$1,000.  Please encourage your students to apply at:  https://forms.gle/AhYLB66nxxVQvjfQ9

• Applicants are required to submit a high school transcript.
• Applicants are required to submit two letters of recommendation.

Essay instructions:  Applicants are required to submit a typed narrative essay explaining “why are you deserving of this scholarship and how will this scholarship assist you in achieving your goals.”  The essay is an important part of the selection process. Essay must be double-spaced, 12 point, Times New Roman font, 1 page maximum, and one-inch margin on all sides. 

In reviewing the essays, the scholarship committee will consider the following criteria in selecting recipients:  Creativity; Correct use of grammar and punctuation; Ability to relate to founding principles of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. – Scholarship, Service, Sisterhood, and Finer Womanhood; Adherence to topic; Cohesiveness of work

DEADLINE:  Scholarship applications AND additional documents must be submitted no later than April 1, 2022. Late and incomplete applications will not be considered.

Honor Society students will be available to tutor in a variety of topics starting Wednesday, February 2nd, and moving forward weekly on Mondays and Wednesdays during lunch and after school in the cafeteria student lounge.
