Good Evening SCS Families. This is Ms. Price with your weekly message for May 30, 2022.
COVID Update
This week SCS reported 2 positive COVID cases, 0 close contacts were identified, and there were 0 class closures. Communication to families whose students were identified as close contacts has been completed. If you have not already been personally contacted, it means your student was NOT in close contact with any of the COVID-19 cases.
End-of-Grade/Course Testing
Our end of year testing window has started and runs until June 10. This includes End-of-Grade tests, End-of-Course tests, CTE assessments, and teacher final exams. The dates are posted on our school website.
Important Date(s)
School will be closed tomorrow, Monday, May 30 in observance of Memorial Day.
The Eighth Grade Recognition & Superlative Program will be June 3. This event is for students only.
The last day of school is June 10 and school will be dismissed at 2:00 p.m.
Intent for Next Year
Parents, our last lottery draw for next school year is coming up soon. If your plans have changed and your student will not be returning next year, and you have not already notified us, please contact Jennifer_Fleming@dpsnc.net before June 3rd to ensure other students on our long waitlist may have an opportunity to attend.

Credit by Demonstrated Mastery
Credit by Demonstrated Mastery summer testing registration is open until Friday, June 10th. Credit by Demonstrated Mastery is a two-phase process by which students can earn credit for a course by demonstrating a deep understanding and mastery of application of content standards prior to taking the course. Students who successfully complete CDM receive a pass/fail grade and course credit. This can be for high school or middle school students who want to request the opportunity to earn credit through high school courses offered. Young Scholars Summer Research Institute
The Young Scholars Summer Research Institute is a three-week program that provides high school students enrolled in Durham Public Schools (DPS) with knowledge to enhance their writing, research, and presentation skills. The program is sponsored by the Samuel DuBois Cook Center on Social Equity at Duke University in partnership with Durham Public Schools (DPS).
Please share this great opportunity within your networks. Attached is a flyer with links to the application that is still open and the program website. This collaboration between DPS and Duke is a great opportunity for students to explore topics near and dear to them and their specific communities.
Program Information
• Program Dates: July 6, 2022 — July 22, 2022, 8:30 am-4:00 pm.
• Cost: Free
• Location: Hillside High School
• Transportation: Provided as needed
• Student Capstone Presentations: July 25, 2022, 5:30-8:00 pm
• Meals: Meals are provided free while onsite, Breakfast, Lunch and Snacks
• Applications: Applications for the 2022 session accepted on a rolling basis.

National Honor Society tutors to the rescue!
Honor Society students will be available to tutor in a variety of topics starting Wednesday, February 2nd, and moving forward weekly on Mondays and Wednesdays during lunch and after school in the cafeteria student lounge.

May 17 is a Teacher Workday and Election Day. There is no school for students.
Our end of year testing window is May 27 – June 10. This includes End-of-Grade tests, End-of-Course tests, CTE assessments, and teacher final exams. The dates of all exams will be posted on our school website.

Back to School Form
This is another reminder to complete the BACK TO SCHOOL FORM so that you can register for bus transportation, confirm your contact information, and more. Again, this is very important to ensure that your child has bus transportation lined up for next year, in addition to other important information. If you showed growth on any of your End-of-Year Benchmark Assessments, you will receive an invitation. The parties will be held Monday, May 16—Middle School at 11:30 a.m. and High School at 12:45 p.m.

National Junior Honor Society applications were distributed last week. Seventh and Eighth grade students with a semester 1 average above 80 in all classes were invited to apply. Please contact Ms. Dix is you believe you were overlooked in error or if you have questions. Applications are due Friday, May 13.

Juniors interested in participating in the Emily Center Summer Intensive College Prep class please visit Ms. Settle’s website for registration information. This program is designed to help students with financial aid, residency applications, college essays and more! Registration must be complete by May 23.

The 7th Annual YMA/Jr. YMA Banquet will be held at Southside Church 800 Elmira Ave from 5 pm – 7:30 pm on Saturday, May 14th. If you would like to attend, please see Coach Barnes. The cost is $15. There will be seated meals and desserts served.

Northern High School Cheerleading Tryouts will be held May 16-19. This tryout will be for both football and basketball seasons. Please stop by the main office to pick up a flyer so you can be aware of the tryout process.

High school Basketball Clubs has been moved to Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 4:15 – 5:30 pm. Please sign up with Mr. Pantoja in order to play.

This year we are happy to offer the “Price Promise” Award to graduating seniors. Seniors who meet the criteria will be recognized at our Graduation Ceremony and will receive a certificate of participation and a graduation gift from SCS. Application forms are available in the main office or from Ms. Neville.
Ms. Price reminds us that “The Learning Never Ends”. Seniors, in order to receive the “Price Promise” Award, you must meet these criteria:
1—Select an extra-curricular activity such as an internship, community service activity, mentorship or other activity that complements their academic preparation;
2—Provide documentation to Ms. Neville of your chosen activity;
3—Write a statement that describes the value of your participation in your chosen activity and how it will prepare you for life after graduation.
