Hello, I’m Renée

  • Weekly Message–March 29-April 2, 2021

Good Evening SCS Families. This is Ms. Price with your Weekly Message for the week of March 29, 2021.

    ***

Dates for Spring Break are March 29–April 2. April 5, 6 and 7 will be asynchronous learning days so teachers can prepare for in-person learning.

    ***

School Nutrition Services is updating our free meal services and SCS is now a pick-up site.  Meals are now available at no cost for any child up to 18 years old—one breakfast and one lunch, per child, per day. Families may pick up meals at SCS in the front carpool line daily Monday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.

This will accommodate any students who are in “cohort” session off-site, siblings who are not in school and non-DPS children.

Parents and guardians of Durham children, learning in the 100% virtual method, may sign up for weekly home meal deliveries through EAT NC. Details are available at eatnorthcarolina.org/dpsschoolmeals.

    ***

Those returning to in-person learning, be on the lookout for a letter with details and instructions for returning to school. Please review this information and let us know if you have any questions prior to your child’s cohort start date. Remember that all students must wear a mask on campus. Bandanas, gaiters and vented masks are not allowed. We will provide masks to students who need them.

You may also refer to the SCS Re-Opening Gryphon Guide on our website under SCS Quicklinks for additional information.

    ***

You are invited to participate in a virtual cooking night sponsored by the SCS PTSA on TUESDAY, APRIL 20, 2021 at 6:30 pm!  Each participant will complete 2 recipes as SWEET faces off versus SAVORY.  After completing and tasting both of the recipes – Breakfast Muffin Rounds and Bangin’ Guac Toast – participants will vote on which recipe they preferred.

To participate, please complete this RSVP Form by Monday, April 5th.  We will provide ALL ingredients for participants.  Items will be available for pick-up at SCS on Sunday, April 18th from 12:00-4:00 pm or on Monday, April 19th from 5:00-6:00 pm.

Here is the link to the cooking night RSVP/survey:  https://forms.gle/xWPniwfxsZTk1LFe8

    ***

Have a wonderful Spring Break  from all of us at SCS where we practice the 4 C’s – Creativity, Communication, Collaboration, and Community.

Students that took the ACT and missed the deadline to select up to four colleges for free, please check the global announcements and  for an updated message from ACT.  The deadline has been extended.

    ACT Message

Students did you miss the ACT deadline to select up to four colleges? If yes, please read the message below from ACT.

Since MyACT is a new online process, we realize access challenges may have caused some students to miss the deadline for completing this process, which includes selecting up to four colleges to send their test scores. Therefore, ACT is providing an additional opportunity for students to do so in the form of a voucher code that can be used in MyACT.

A voucher code is being provided to students participating in State-sponsored testing who have not selected at least one college for automated score reporting. Students who entered at least one college for score reporting are not eligible for a voucher code. The code will be printed in the top righthand corner on page 1 of the student’s paper score report and is redeemable for the one-time purchase of up to four additional score reports at no cost. Additional college choices may be included for a fee for which the student is responsible. All voucher codes will expire, so students should be encouraged to use the code within two weeks of receiving their paper score report.

Students meeting the voucher code eligibility requirements above must wait until they receive their paper score report to obtain their voucher code and use it in MyACT. For the February 23 test window, students will begin receiving their printed score reports at their home address the week of March 15.

Students who created a MyACT account prior to their test being scored will receive an email from myact@act.org when their scores are posted to their account. They should wait for their paper score report and then follow the instructions outlined on it to redeem their voucher code within MyACT.

Students who have not yet created a MyACT account will need their paper score report containing their ACT ID to create their account. Once you have received your paper score report by mail, you should go to MyACT.org and follow the prompts. For an outline of these steps, refer to the MyACT Quick Start Guide, “Student has ACT scores, but doesn’t yet have an account,” page 4.

If you need assistance related to your paper score reports, finding your scores online, or creating or accessing your MyACT account, please click on the Contact Us link on MyACT.org.

    Women’s History Month Spotlight

As the first Chinese American movie star, Anna May Wong used her fame to challenge racism and stereotypes in Hollywood. Growing up in Los Angeles, Wong was captivated by the world of Hollywood and spent much of her childhood at the movies and hanging around studios begging directors to give her a role in their movies. In 1922 at 17 years old, Wong earned her first leading role in The Toll of the Sea. Wong was frequently told that she was “too Chinese to play Chinese,” and was often passed over for other actresses. Wong began to speak out against racism and refused to play offensive stereotypical roles, choosing to act exclusively in B-list movies that allowed her the opportunity to play strong Chinese characters. Wong’s legacy paved the way for actresses of color in Hollywood.
