Artificial Institute/AI Summer Session—Opportunity for Students in Grades 9-12 

At Inspirit AI, students participate in live online video sessions where they work in small groups (4:1 student-instructor ratio) with mentors from MIT and Stanford to learn the fundamentals of artificial intelligence, participate in critical discussions about ethical implications, and develop a socially impactful project in domains such as healthcare, media, art and more. Students can apply their diverse interests to trace different strains of COVID-19, identify exoplanets using NASA datasets, prevent the spread of fake news online, conduct algorithmic stock trading, and more. 

Students of all levels (from complete beginners to advanced coders) are invited to apply here by March 31st for our spring or summer sessions.

Students that took the ACT and missed the deadline to select up to four colleges for free, please check the global announcements and  for an updated message from ACT.  The deadline has been extended.

ACT Message

Students did you miss the ACT deadline to select up to four colleges? If yes, please read the message below from ACT.

Since MyACT is a new online process, we realize access challenges may have caused some students to miss the deadline for completing this process, which includes selecting up to four colleges to send their test scores. Therefore, ACT is providing an additional opportunity for students to do so in the form of a voucher code that can be used in MyACT.   

A voucher code is being provided to students participating in State-sponsored testing who have not selected at least one college for automated score reporting. Students who entered at least one college for score reporting are not eligible for a voucher code. The code will be printed in the top righthand corner on page 1 of the student’s paper score report and is redeemable for the one-time purchase of up to four additional score reports at no cost. Additional college choices may be included for a fee for which the student is responsible. All voucher codes will expire, so students should be encouraged to use the code within two weeks of receiving their paper score report. 

Students meeting the voucher code eligibility requirements above must wait until they receive their paper score report to obtain their voucher code and use it in MyACT. For the February 23 test window, students will begin receiving their printed score reports at their home address the week of March 15.  
Students who created a MyACT account prior to their test being scored will receive an email from myact@act.org when their scores are posted to their account. They should wait for their paper score report and then follow the instructions outlined on it to redeem their voucher code within MyACT.  
Students who have not yet created a MyACT account will need their paper score report containing their ACT ID to create their account. Once you have received your paper score report by mail, you should go to MyACT.org and follow the prompts. For an outline of these steps, refer to the MyACT Quick Start Guide, “Student has ACT scores, but doesn’t yet have an account,” page 4.

Students you are invited to a virtual career expo, which will be held on Wednesday, March 24th from 10am – 2pm. This career expo is focused on production opportunities in Durham. Our goal is to only include positions that pay at least $12.80/hour and offer benefits.

As a follow up to this Tuesday’s Women’s History Month Panel, Meet the Amazing Women Behind the U.S. EPA’s COVID-19 Research, EPA-RTP’s Community Engagement & STEM Education Program is organizing a session of Career Conversations with high school-aged young women and EPA women researchers and staff on Wednesday, March 17th, 2-3pm. EPA women researchers and staff will speak with students in small groups about their career and educational experience during four 10-minute rotations. Discussions are informal and students will be able to ask lots of questions! The event will take place on MS Teams and the link will be provided upon registration. Descending from the Scott, Faulcon and other families in North Carolina and Virginia, Akinitsisahn Day Hedgepeth is a member of the Saponi Nation of Ohio.  As part of her tribal and intertribal communities, Ms. Hedgepeth is active via council, traditional singing and dancing, language revitalization, activism and culture.  As part of her professional life, Ms. Hedgepeth is a graphic designer and landscaper however her most important role in life is as a mother and wife.  It is her pleasure to share anything she can with anyone willing to hear about her people, who are thriving with vibrance and authenticity.  Ms. Hedgepeth will be joining us tomorrow as one of our guest speakers in our Community Circle.  She, (as well as We), look forward to seeing you there as she will enlighten us “In Footsteps of Dignity.”

The Durham Alumni Chapter has established a scholarship program to assist Durham County High School students who are pursuing a college education at North Carolina A&T State University. This is a $500 /year one-time scholarship for books and fees offered to incoming freshman full time students attending North Carolina A&T State University.


Applicants to the Durham Chapter Scholarship Program must be-

1. High School Seniors currently enrolled in a Durham County North Carolina High School

2. Applicant /Recipient must register at North Carolina A&T State University as a full time** student.

** Full time student is defined as full time enrollment for the entire upcoming academic year.

3. Applicant must currently have a minimum grade point average of 2.8 (weighted) on a 4.0 scale (or its equivalent).

4. Applicant /Recipient must not be the recipient of a full academic or athletic scholarship to North Carolina A&T State University.

The application deadlines for high school seniors to apply to two of our guaranteed admissions pathways,  C-STEP to UNC Chapel Hill, and C3 to NC State are upcoming.The deadline for C-STEP is April 1, and the deadline for C3 is rolling until June 1.  These pathways might be good options for students who worry about college costs or fall just below the admissions criteria for entrance straight from high school but are still strong students.

Established in 2011, the Lawrence and Artelia Perry Scholarship Fund is a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to providing scholarships for students at Bennett College, Livingstone College, and North Carolina Central University. The Fund seeks to assist students who are attending or will attend either of these three schools with expenses related to their college experience on the basis of merit and need. If you are a graduate (or upcoming 2020 graduate) of any Durham, NC public school (including charter schools funded by the State of North Carolina) you are eligible to apply for a scholarship from this Scholarship Fund. The Duke University Neuroscience Experience (DUNE) is an 8-week summer research program for rising high school juniors and seniors in the Research Triangle area. Our mission is to make science more accessible to outstanding students from a broad range of backgrounds and experiences to foster a dynamic and creative scientific community. Students will be matched with participating labs based on research interests and will have an opportunity to participate in real, ongoing research under the mentorship of volunteer graduate students and/or postdoctoral fellows within the Neurobiology and Psychology & Neuroscience departments. In addition to research experience students will also participate in professional development activities including college advising, scientific communication workshops, and career sessions. The program is a full-time commitment and will come with a $2460 stipend. In addition, since we will be completely virtual this year we will be providing each student with a computer to facilitate participation. Applications will be accepted through 3/26/21. Criteria for Scholarship 

For Students with Special Needs

 Submit documentation indicating enrollment and/or acceptance in an accredited college, university or post-secondary career school.

1.            Submit two (2) sealed letters of recommendation:  one must be from the school on letterhead and signed by a teacher, counselor, principal, advisor, or department chair.

2.            Submit signed documentation from the leader of the organization/program verifying community service/volunteer service.

3.            Submit signed documentation from the leader indicating participation in extracurricular activities such as drama, sports, etc.

4.            Submit the signed parental consent form verifying the presence of an intellectual or learning disability.  

5.            Submit a typed paragraph (200-250 words) regarding future educational goals and objectives and how this scholarship will help to support those goals.

6.            Submit official transcript with school seal verifying at least an unweighted GPA of 2.5.

7.            Submit documents verifying memberships, activities, and honors.

8.            Submit a 3×5 inch photo which may be used for Sorority and media publications.

9.            Submit completed application packet to the local chapter before April 30, 2021

Duke Research in Engineering Program

DukeREP is a 7-week summer research program for rising juniors and seniors. This year it will be held virtually. Students will learn about research concepts and remotely engage in experiments. 

Program Goals: 

• Gain exposure to academic research  

• Learn experimental design and data analysis  

• Explore careers in science and engineering  

• Prepare for college applications 

Program Information:  

• Program Dates: June 14th, 2021 to July 30th, 2021  

• Students will participate weekdays from 9 am to 2 pm  

• No cost to apply or attend  

• Students will compose a final research report and presentation  

• Students will workshop their college essays and resume  

• Students will attend talks by professors and graduate students
