Good Evening SCS Families. This is Ms. Price with your Weekly Message for the weeks of November 23 and 30.

We’d like to recognize all of our students who earned recognition for Quarter 1 A and A/B Honor Roll. Certificates and a surprise for students will be mailed this week! We will communicate our plan to recognize students virtually. 

Progress Reports are available for parents to review Tuesday, November 24. You may access your child’s Progress Report by visiting your Parent Portal account. If you don’t have your Parent Portal account, we are available Monday-Friday 8:30-4:30 for you to stop by the school to pick up your Parent Portal Account information. You will need to bring your picture ID. If these hours are not convenient for you, please call the school so we can assist you with getting your Parent Portal information. 

I’m happy to announce two upcoming Pop in with Price sessions where I’ll have some guests join me. The sessions will be Tuesday, December 1, 5:30–7:30 and December 10, 5:30–7:30 p.m. Ms. Fleming, our data manager, and Ms. Bridges, our Instructional Coach, will be in attendance to assist you with Parent Portal access and Canvas Observer accounts. So, please stop by anytime during those times on either date and chat with me or get your log-in information for Parent Portal and register for your Canvas Observer accounts. 

We are happy for Ms. Mitchell as she is out on maternity leave, we are looking for a long – term substitute for her classes. Lessons and activities will be posted in Canvas by Monday, November 30. Once assignments are posted, students should contact Ms. Price if they have any questions. 

Seniors, it is not too late for you to order your cap & gown. Visit jostens.com and select our school. 

The deadline to submit proof of required immunizations and school health assessments has been extended to Dec. 30, 2020. After this point a student must be excluded from in-person and remote learning until compliant with requirements.

All 7th graders in North Carolina are required by state law (Statute G.S. 130-A-152 (a), Administrative Code 10A NCAC 41A.0401) to receive one dose of Tdap (Tetanus, Diptheria, and Pertussis) vaccine and one dose of MCV (Meningococcal) vaccine. All 12th graders in North Carolina are required by state law (Statute G.S. 10A NCAC 41A .0401) to receive Meningococcal Conjugate vaccine (MenACWY). If your student is in need of these immunizations, you should have received a letter from the school via US Mail. 

Please plan to stop by the office to pick up the science kits for grades 6 and 7 that will be used for instruction this quarter. 

We encourage you to join our PTSA. Students are also encouraged to join. We have regularly scheduled meetings for students so they can make their voices heard about activities at our school. The link to join: www.thescsptsa.com. 

One of the measures of the health of a school is the membership in PTSA. Let’s increase our membership from last year! This week is a short week as we prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving Break. School is in session for students Monday and Tuesday. The school is closed Wednesday through Friday. Students return to school Monday, November.

READY, SET, APP! CYCLE 2 IS LIVE REGISTRATION CLOSES NOVEMBER 30, 2020 

The Ready, Set, App! challenge is an Android mobile app development competition for North Carolina students. Student groups will develop a functional and original mobile app using a mobile app development platform, such as MIT App Inventor, to solve a problem in their community or school. The top teams will get the opportunity to pitch their app at the Virtual Ready, Set, App! Competition in April to win Lenovo-branded prizes. • Participants must be in 9-12th grade.
• This competition is for public or public charter high schools in NC.
• Teams of 3-5.
• Each team must have an educator to serve as their advisor.

Do you enjoy art, music or dance or have an interest in writing, producing films or taking photos?! Then join us and have fun unleashing your inner artist with PTA Reflections! This year’s theme, “I Matter Because…” calls for your own unique interpretation through the arts. Students will have the opportunity to compete on state and national levels for awards and recognition. The financial awards range from $200-$800! The Air Force ROTC admissions counselor will hold a virtual information session on 11/18/2020 at 10:00am.  This program includes scholarships for perspective students, no basic training, professional and educational training opportunities, traditional college life, medical/dental benefits, paid travel, paid training, 30 days paid vacation per year, and graduate degree opportunities.  There are 37 participating colleges/universities and community colleges here in North Carolina.  If you have any questions prior to Lieutenant Kelly’s visit please contact Mrs. Settle. 

East Tennessee State University is scheduled for November 18 at 11am. The admission counselor will be there to discuss their new tuition reset, $10,500 for tuition PER YEAR, not semester, for NC students to attend ETSU. This reset is a permanent change as well, so students need not worry about tuition going back up to out of state levels after their freshman year. This event is open to all students, expected for our seniors.

This is just a reminder that the Game Plan College Workshops on Wellness Wednesdays (in partnership with the College Advising Corps Advisors) are still underway weekly at 2:30 pm through December 2, 2020. While the workshops are geared toward seniors, all students, regardless of grade level, are invited to attend.

Students, there are many things we “Gotta’ do” … and there are the things we “Get to do”.  Those actions in the “Get To Do” category are called Privileges.  How many can “Get To Do’s” can you count?  Think about it.  Think about how fortunate you are to be a citizen here … a student at SCS … and a member of this Community.

This week, please take time out to begin to make a list of your Privileges.  Some might call them Blessings.  Others may call them Gifts.  At any rate, I promise you that if you pause to reflect on all the things you “Get to Do” that it will make you glad.

DRIVER EDUCATION VIRTUAL COURSE BEGINS NOVEMBER 30, 2020/ REGISTRATION NOVEMBER 16-20, 2020Durham Public Schools will reopen its Driver Education course through a virtual classroom format. The three-week (fifteen-days) class will begin on November 30, 2020 with two-hours daily of online instruction for a total of 30 required hours at each high school.  The registration window for the Driver Education class will open November 16 at 8:00am and will close on November 20 at 5:00pm. Parents/students should check the DPS web page on November 16 at 8:00am to sign up (www.dpsnc.net).  Click on “Programs and Services” and then “Driver Education” and then  “Registration Information.”  NOTE:  SCS Students may register for any high school. At the close of registration, students will be selected for the Driver’s Education course by age – oldest to youngest.Students will be notified on Monday, November 23 if they are selected for the November 30 Driver Education course.  If not selected, students will be put on a waiting list for the next class in late January 2021. To be eligible for Driver Education, the student must be 14 ½ years of age at time of registration in order to enroll in the class.  Please contact Dave Roberson at (919) 560-3702 with questions.

Our next School Improvement Team meeting will be held Wednesday, November 18^th from 3:00 – 4:00. The time commitment includes one monthly meeting and any additional sub-committee responsibilities that may arise. 2. She and Ms. Grant are working on a time that the 11th and 12th grade students can complete the assessment.
3.  She has contacted Mr. Oakley and Ms. Williams with suggested activities for the month.

Take on the Fall Environmental Film Challenge: Make a short film on environmental issues relating to the Mississippi River.

Video Style and Length:

Video submissions must be between 3-5 minutes and can be created in any style — feel free to get creative!!

Winning videos will be shown at the 2021 QC Environmental Film Series, and will receive $100 cash prize AND $150 classroom grant for a chosen educator! Plus, videos will be featured onFresh Films platforms!

Students will have the opportunity to compete on state and national levels for awards and recognition. The financial awards range from $200-$800! Take on the Fall Environmental Film Challenge: Make a short film on environmental issues relating to the Mississippi River.

Video Style and Length:

Video submissions must be between 3-5 minutes and can be created in any style — feel free to get creative!!

Winning videos will be shown at the 2021 QC Environmental Film Series, and will receive $100 cash prize AND $150 classroom grant for a chosen educator! Plus, videos will be featured onFresh Films platforms!

Submission deadline is November 15th!

East Tennessee State University is scheduled for November 18 at 11am. The admission counselor will be there to discuss their new tuition reset, $10,500 for tuition PER YEAR, not semester, for NC students to attend ETSU. This reset is a permanent change as well, so students need not worry about tuition going back up to out of state levels after their freshman year. This event is open to all students, expected for our seniors.

This is just a reminder that the Game Plan College Workshops on Wellness Wednesdays (in partnership with the College Advising Corps Advisors) are still underway weekly at 2:30 pm through December 2, 2020. While the workshops are geared toward seniors, all students, regardless of grade level, are invited to attend.

Students, there are many things we “Gotta’ do” … and there are the things we “Get to do”.  Those actions in the “Get To Do” category are called Privileges.  How many can “Get To Do’s” can you count?  Think about it.  Think about how fortunate you are to be a citizen here … a student at SCS … and a member of this Community.

This week, please take time out to begin to make a list of your Privileges.  Some might call them Blessings.  Others may call them Gifts.  At any rate, I promise you that if you pause to reflect on all the things you “Get to Do” that it will make you glad.

Note that this is an asynchronous assignment for Wednesday, November 11^th.

2021 graduates:  You should have received the SCS Graduation Packet mailed on October 21^st requesting extremely important information concerning the spelling of your name on your diploma.  The due date for this information is now past due.  Please review the name on the document and confirm the spelling by visiting the Google form link provided on the document.  Diploma orders will be made by November 13^th and any corrections needed after this date will require you to make correction fee payment.  If you have misplaced this document, here is the link:
