Good Evening SCS Families. This is Ms. Price with your weekly message for the week of October 25, 2021.
We will hold our middle school AIG Parent Night October 26 from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. via Zoom. Please look for invitations from Ms. Taylor.
We have a fun-filled Spirit Week scheduled this week! Check out the SCS website calendar, my blog, the social media sites, and the signs around the school to start planning your outfits!
Spirit Week – October 25-29
Monday: College/Jersey/Sports Day—What college or sport do you want to represent?
Tuesday: Twin Day—Find someone to dress like!
Wednesday: Dress to Impress Day—Business Casual Attire
Thursday: Tacky Day—Show off your best wacky tacky spirit!
Friday: Costume Day—You decide on your costume but remember no props and you must still wear a face mask that covers your nose and mouth (for COVID-19 protection) and wear no full face mask.
Durham Public Schools, in partnership with MAKO Medical, will begin providing weekly COVID-19 testing at our school this week to help identify possible COVID-19 infections among students even if they’re not showing any symptoms. Research has shown such testing can reduce the spread by 50%, especially in large settings such as schools.
The testing is a simple swab of the nose and not the test that tickles the brain. This is the same test families can administer from home or at local testing sites.
This is a voluntary testing process, so a parent or guardian must register their student to participate. The link to register is included in the email version of this message, posted on our website and my blog. A hard copy letter will be sent home with your student when we return from break. All testing information and results will remain confidential.
I encourage our families to register their students for this free opportunity. Together, we can keep our students safe, in their classrooms, and prevent community spread.
Register your student today with this link: https://home.color.com/covid/sign-up/start?partner=tf-dur-688-students
The School for Creative Studies has been designated as a Targeted Support and Improvement-Additional Targeted Support (TSI-AT) school by the North Carolina State Board of Education. As stated in ESSA Section 1111(d)(2), North Carolina had to identify schools for targeted support and improvement. TSI-AT schools in North Carolina are those that have a subgroup that is under-performing. The intent of this opportunity is to improve educational outcomes for all students, close achievement gaps, increase equity, and improve the quality of instruction.
As a TSI-AT school, The School for Creative Studies is required to develop a comprehensive plan that specifically addresses how the school will improve student achievement. The plan will also include how our district will support us and monitor the progress of our school. The comprehensive plan will address the following areas: Classroom Management, Standards-aligned Instruction, Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), Instructional Leadership, Recruitment & Retention of Effective Teachers, Support for Grade-to-Grade Transitions, Implementation of a Tiered Instructional System, Data-Driven Decision Making, Student Support Services, and Family and Community Engagement.
A virtual information session for all DPS students and their families interested in the 2022 NC Governor’s School Session will be held Monday, October 25 from 6:00 — 7:00 p.m. The four week residential opportunity allows students to explore current topics through multiple areas of interest. During the information session, participants will receive an overview of Governor’s School and hear from past participants. For more information visit NC Governor’s School Information Session or contact Laura Parrott, Director of Advanced Academics, Laura_Parrott@dpsnc.net
Emily K Game Plan: College Program will host a FAFSA night at the Emily K Center on October 26 & 27 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. If you need assistance with completing the FAFSA or Residency Determination Application please make time to attend this event.
If a SCS family is interested in traveling to Italy with us during Summer 2022, the window to enroll in that trip will close at the end of December 2021. If you have questions regarding the trip being offered at this school, please contact Ms. Sims at Elizabeth_sims@dpsnc.net. There is also a link: www.eftours.com2395056zz
