Weekly Message–April 26-30, 2021

Good Evening SCS Families. This is Ms. Price with your Weekly Message for the week of April 26, 2021.

Tomorrow at 5:00 p.m. is the deadline to complete the End-of-Year testing intention survey. Since these are state assessments, students will take these tests in person, in school, with health and safety protocols in place.

We need this information so we can complete our plans for testing our virtual, remote learning students. We will communicate assigned testing dates and schedule soon after the survey window closes.

High school students, remember that EOC’s count as 20% of your final grade as required by state law. EOC courses include English 2, Biology, Math I and Math III. If you do not take an EOC, it will impact your grade.

It is time to pass the torch! The SCS PTSA needs you! On May 12, the PTSA will be holding elections for the upcoming 2021-2022 school year. Volunteers are needed for the President, Vice-President, Treasurer, and Secretary positions. Some of our veteran board members are willing to remain on the board as chairs or at-large members to help our PTSA continue to be successful. If you would like to help, please click on the link below for more information on the positions and to place your name on the ballot. Let’s make this upcoming school year the best yet for SCS!

FIRE resumes Monday and Tuesday. Students will receive a reminder email on Monday morning with their Zoom link.

Ignite! Online Academy will offer flexible summer learning opportunities for students to accelerate their learning.  In addition to the courses offered through our eLearning partners, Ignite will be offering Chemistry, Health & Physical Education, NC Math 2, Physics, Pre-Calculus, Civic and Economics and Word History taught by DPS teachers.  Interested students and/or their families should reach out to their counselor for a contract and more information.

Summer learning opportunities will also be offered for students who are not performing at the expected level. If your student may need to attend summer school, you will receive a letter in the mail this week. If you have questions after you receive it, please contact me.

Graduates, we are in the process of organizing cap and gown pictures. We have scheduled May 7 as our Cap and Gown picture date.  We have the option of personalizing yard signs for graduates and would like to use your cap and gown pictures.  Also, these images may be used during the graduation ceremony that will be held at NCCU on June 2.   If you have not ordered your cap and gown as of today please visit Jostens.com to order – https://tinyurl.com/xm4pjw3s

We’ll share more information soon concerning graduation guidelines and tickets.  Information will also be kept updated on our SCS Graduates Canvas page as it is made available so make sure you have subscribed to that page.

In the 2021-2022 school year, Durham Public Schools families will be launching Ignite! Online Academy as a virtual school for grades K-12. Ignite! will be the virtual learning option for the 2021-2022 school year. Ignite! Online Academy will enroll students through the commitment form HERE. Ignite is an excellent option for families who are enthusiastic about online learning, are homeschooling currently, or have already made their decision to enroll in online learning for the 2021-2022 school year! Families that commit through the form would officially move their placement from their base or magnet school to Ignite for the entire 2021-2022 school year. All families who wish to receive virtual learning in the 2021-2022 school year must use the form to sign up for Ignite. Families that need more information can attend the Ignite Virtual Q&A sessions (bit.ly/learnignite) Monday, April 26th at 7pm.

Public Affairs has shared information with DPS families about registering your student for free COVID-19 Testing conducted by Ottendorf Labs that will be available districtwide. Parents/guardians will need to provide consent for your child to be tested.  Please see the attached flyers (English, Spanish) with more information and the link to provide your consent. Details are forthcoming regarding the schedule for all schools.

Have a good evening  from all of us at SCS where we practice the 4 C’s – Creativity, Communication, Collaboration, and Community.
