SCHOLARS-AT-WORK SUMMER EDITION (JUNE 14-18)

Introducing the first year of Scholars-At-Work Summer Edition. Applications are due by April 16th for high school juniors and seniors. Groups of students are matched to companies for a five-day immersion experience and they receive a $100 stipend.   Emergency Medicine: Diversity in Discipline,
Professions, and Patient Population

This week-long experience will allow students to participate in lectures, procedure labs, simulation, and clinical experiences that introduce them to the specialty of Emergency Medicine, its unique scope of practice, combination of professions, and varied patient population. Through these experiences, we will also explore how the specialty of Emergency Medicine addresses healthcare disparities. If you are interested or have further questions, please contact the Course Director, Maglin Halsey-Nichols (maglin_halsey@med.unc.edu). Parents, in order to effectively plan for next school year, we must request all parents complete an intent form for each student in grades 6-11 by TODAY.  2021 Brothers United in Leadership Development (B.U.I.L.D.) Summit 
Overview: 
The Brothers United in Leadership Development (B.U.I.L.D.) Summit is an annual event designed to expose 9th-11th grade high school male students–particularly male students of color–to the diverse role of leaders in a growing global society. The theme for this year’s B.U.I.L.D. Summit is “Vision Reactivated: Building Confidence, Community, and Connections”. Registration for this event is now open and limited to 100 participants.

021 HireAHelper Skilled Trade & Technology Scholarships
Growing demand and lack of qualified workers in skilled trades like the moving industry means it’s a great time to go back to school and enter these lucrative and fast-growing industries. To help keep up with demand and assist the next generation of professionals, HireAHelper will award a $2,000 scholarship four times a year to eligible students.

Established in 2011, the Lawrence and Artelia Perry Scholarship Fund is a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to providing scholarships for students at Bennett College, Livingstone College, and North Carolina Central University. The Fund seeks to assist students who are attending or will attend either of these three schools with expenses related to their college experience on the basis of merit and need. If you are a graduate (or upcoming 2020 graduate) of any Durham, NC public school (including charter schools funded by the State of North Carolina) you are eligible to apply for a scholarship from this Scholarship Fund. The HistoryMakers is a national 501(c)(3) non-profit research and educational institution committed to preserving and making widely accessible the untold personal stories of both well-known and unsung African Americans. The HistoryMakers is always looking for talented and inspired candidates.  To that end, The HistoryMakers is now accepting applications from high school students for their “2021-2022 Student Brand AmbassadorProgram”.  Those accepted will be paid $15/hour for 10 hours/week of virtual work.  Please go to Global Announcements for details about eligibility and how to apply for this program. 

Applicants must be a current sophomore, junior, senior, or graduate student and able to commit to working from Summer (June) 2021 through the full academicyear (May 2022). Student brand ambassadors will be expected to submit weekly progress reports, and participate in weekly conference calls. Those accepted will be paid $15/hour and be expected to work virtually 10 hours per week. The deadline to apply is May 7, 2021.

CANCER SYSTEMS BIOLOGY SUMMER RESEARCH EXPERIENCE FOR STUDENTS

Join a research team at Duke University for an 8-10 week summer internship working with other students and faculty at Duke University and the University of Texas, San Antonio on systems biology approaches for studying cancer drug resistance. VIDEO CONTEST FOR STUDENTS IN GRADES 9-12 “HOW DOES LIGHT CHANGE THE WORLD?”

FAFSA Drive-In events are happening around the state April 17 and 24. Encourage seniors and their families to get FAFSA help. In addition to in-person events at 17 locations, there will be virtual FAFSA assistance statewide on those days. Create an account (using your personal email so nothing gets blocked), and you can start browsing all the opportunities in the Durham area. You also can participate in virtual job opportunities. Storytellers and filmmakers ages 13-19: submit short films that educate and inspire action on important issues in your world. Winners of the competition will win a 5G phone and be celebrated at an AT&T Youth Voices Collective event at Tribeca Film Festival!   The mission: Create a 1-3 minute short film using a mobile device (think smartphones, tablets and drones) on one of the following themes:   1. Climate Change 2. Social Justice 3. Digital Divide   Think about how these issues affect you and your geographic, cultural, or social communities. During the Virtual College Fair, you will have the chance to hear from many different colleges. You can choose which colleges you want to hear from by registering for their sessions. You and your family can ask questions of the college representatives throughout the presentations too!

All sessions will be recorded, so please register for ALL college/universities that you have an interest in, even if you can’t make the live session…you’ll have an opportunity to watch the recordings later!

The application deadlines for high school seniors to apply to two of our guaranteed admissions pathways,  C-STEP to UNC Chapel Hill, and C3 to NC State are upcoming.The deadline for C-STEP is April 1, and the deadline for C3 is rolling until June 1.  These pathways might be good options for students who worry about college costs or fall just below the admissions criteria for entrance straight from high school but are still strong students.

Criteria for Scholarship 

For Students with Special Needs

 Submit documentation indicating enrollment and/or acceptance in an accredited college, university or post-secondary career school.

1.            Submit two (2) sealed letters of recommendation:  one must be from the school on letterhead and signed by a teacher, counselor, principal, advisor, or department chair.

2.            Submit signed documentation from the leader of the organization/program verifying community service/volunteer service.

3.            Submit signed documentation from the leader indicating participation in extracurricular activities such as drama, sports, etc.

4.            Submit the signed parental consent form verifying the presence of an intellectual or learning disability.  

5.            Submit a typed paragraph (200-250 words) regarding future educational goals and objectives and how this scholarship will help to support those goals.

6.            Submit official transcript with school seal verifying at least an unweighted GPA of 2.5.

7.            Submit documents verifying memberships, activities, and honors.

8.            Submit a 3×5 inch photo which may be used for Sorority and media publications.

9.            Submit completed application packet to the local chapter before April 30, 2021
