Women’s History Month Spotlight
Kamala Devi Harris is the first woman and first woman of color to hold the position of Vice President of the United States of America. Prior to being sworn in by Justice Sonia Sotomayor on January 20, 2021, Harris became the first African American to represent California in the United States Senate. Her political journey has also included holding the positions of California Attorney General, San Francisco District Attorney, and Deputy District Attorney. Harris attended Howard University and the University of California, Hastings College of the Law, earning her Juris Doctorate in 1989. As a toddler, Harris was brought to civil rights demonstrations. Her mother emigrated from India and was a renowned breast-cancer researcher and her father Donald was an Economic Professor at Stanford University. Harris’s mother maintained ties to her Indian heritage by raising Kamala and her sister Maya with Hindu beliefs. When attending high school in Montreal, Quebec, Harris learned French and discovered her own political instincts when she organized a protest against a building owner who wouldn’t allow neighborhood kids to play on the lawn!
