Weekly Message–January 11-15, 2021

Good Evening SCS Families. This is Ms. Price with your Weekly Message for the week of January 11.

The Durham Public Schools Board of Education has voted that we will be in Plan C for the remainder of the school year. So, we will continue to learn remotely. Please read your emails, listen to messages from the school and attend events that we schedule to ensure we can continue to share best practices and support students and families as we continue this remote learning journey together.

I’m pleased to announce that our PTSA has been selected as an award recipient of $800 for the 2020-2021 Healthy Schools Mini Grant from the the NC PTA. There was a lot of competition for this grant and the grant was very detailed and outlined the steps we already take to make our school a healthier place. Thanks to parents Nathan Hester and Tanisha Davis for their leadership in completing this grant.

Join us for our upcoming PTSA Dine out Night —Monday, January 11at Chipotle Roxboro Rd. 4:00 – 8:00 p.m.

(Must present flyer—on social media sites, Ms. Price’s blog and the SCS website)

The DPS magnet lottery will be available from January 11th until February 5th on the DPS website. Current students do not have to reapply to the school but if you have siblings that you wish to attend, you must enter them into the DPS lottery and link them to the currently attending sibling. Please contact Rita.Rathbone@dpsnc.net with DPS magnet lottery questions.

The end of the quarter is this Friday, January 15. Report cards will be viewable via the PowerSchool Parent Portal January 22. If you don’t have your Parent Portal account, we are available Monday-Friday 8:30-4:30 for you to stop by the school to pick up your Parent Portal Account information. You will need to bring your picture ID. If these hours are not convenient for you, please call the school so we can assist you with getting your Parent Portal information. You may also contact your child’s homeroom teacher for assistance.

The directions for creating a Canvas Parent Observer Account can be found at canvas.dpsnc.net.  There you will find step-by-step written directions, a video explanation, Canvas Observer Guide and information for downloading the mobile app.  It is important that you create an observer account because some announcements will only be sent to Parent Observers and you can see your child’s activity in Canvas.

Seniors, it is still not too late for you to order your cap & gown. Visit jostens.com and select our school.

January 18 is a school holiday in recognition of the Martin Luther King Holiday. The third quarter begins January 19. January 19 is a Teacher Workday and Remote Learning Day for students. Students should sign in to Canvas during the day to complete work for each class.

Have a good evening from all of us at SCS where we practice the 4 C’s – Creativity, Communication, Collaboration, and Community.
