We’d like to give you some reminders about Wellness Wednesday. It is still an instructional day, with asynchronous and social emotional learning, for all students.  The protocol for SCS is that students must log into Canvas and check in at each of their classes by 2:00 p.m. and complete any assignments that teachers choose to leave for them. 

Representatives from the Emily K Center will continue their College Mini Series during today’s Wellness Wednesday offerings.  Seniors will meet at 1pm to discuss the College Application Process, Sophomores and Juniors will meet at 11am to discuss the college admissions process, and Freshman will meet at 9am to discuss Connecting the Dots towards career.  Please plan to attend these sessions.

Students, have you ever stopped to think about the character traits that describe you?  One positive character trait is Self-Discipline.  DPS values Self-Discipline as a character trait that we all need and has dedicated this month to focus on ways to demonstrate this trait. 

Please use this Wellness Wednesday to do a self-check on the ways that you need to demonstrate Self-Discipline and the actions you take to do so.  Begin by writing down some examples of times when Self-Discipline helped you and others.

Next week we will meet in a Community Building Circle to share our thoughts and experiences with Self-Discipline.

Carolinas Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers virtual college exploration event will be held September 14th-October 9th.  Students will have the opportunity to participate in several events related to the college admission process.  Registration information for these events can be found on Mrs. Settle’s website.

Students looking to flex their app development muscles are encouraged to sign up for this year’s Congressional App Challenge and submit their project by October 19th. There are two Digital Congressional App Challenge Jumpstarter events in partnership with Fidelity Investments to help students develop their idea for an app. These events will take place on Thursday, September 17th and September 24th from 2:30 – 4:30 PM.Any middle or high school student in the Fourth Congressional District is invited to attend, and no prior coding experience is necessary!        RSVP for the Digital Congressional App Challenge Jumpstarter Event   Students may participate on either session date. DUKE HEALTH PROFESSION RECRUITMENT & EXPOSURE PROGRAM FOR STUDENTS

Duke Medical School’s HPREP is accepting new students from high school interested in the medical sciences.  A flyer can be found here. This is an outreach program designed to provide high school students with the opportunity to interact with medical students, faculty, and other health professionals.  A modest award may be provided to all accepted participants who meet program requirements. Tentative Dates for HPREP sessions are January 30; February 6 and 20; March 6 and 20; April 3 and 17; and May 1. Good Evening SCS Families. This is Ms. Price with your Weekly Message for the week of September 14.

Our Virtual Curriculum Night will be held Thursday, September 17 from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. The links to the teachers’ classrooms will be live at 6:00 p.m Thursday in Canvas on the Global Announcements. So you will need to have access from your child’s account or you will need to have set up your parent observer account. Please make sure you have your child’s schedule and plan to rotate to a new class approximately every 15 minutes. 

Please make sure your seniors are attending their scheduled senior meetings.  Mrs. Settle has had several students miss their meetings and their participation is mandatory.  Please check with your student and have them reschedule if they missed their meeting.

Emails were sent out in the beginning of August with instructions on how to access and complete your child’s online registration. DPS has moved to a digital platform for registration and enrollment and this was rolled out in August. The district would like for every family to complete online registration for their students so that we have the most up to date and current information for your child’s PowerSchool record. If you have not already done so, please use the access information found in that email sent at the beginning of August and go online to complete your child’s digital registration for the 2020-2021 school year. If you cannot find the email or if you did not receive one, please contact the school and give us a valid email address so that we can send you your personalized registration codes. Thank you in advance for your assistance in completing this very important registration process for your child!

Our AIG Facilitator, Ms. Gray Taylor, is requesting that all AIG parents fill out a brief form to gather information on her Google form. The permissions have now been corrected so you can access the document. Thanks to all of you who tried to complete it last week. Please take a moment to complete the form and read her introduction letter on the SCS website.

What is the Fresh Films Film Pathway?I

What is the Fresh Films Film Pathway?It’s a chance for youth ages 15-19 to learn film skills all year long. You’ll meet weekly (virtually for now) to work on projects small film groups. You’ll also meet in separate workforce development sessions that will prepare you for summer 2021, when you may get the chance to work on a real film set and/or earn a paid media internship!

We are accepting applications on a rolling deadline through October 11th – so apply as soon as possible to connect with other youth around the country, learn new filmmaking skills and get creative telling your stories.

NOTE: Due to COVID-19 restrictions, we will be meeting virtually through the end of December and will plan to meet in person at your local host location when it becomes safe to do so.

The program is free and no film experience or special equipment required. You just need an internet connection, a smartphone or tablet, and a desire to gain new film skills.
