Good Evening SCS Families. This is Ms. Price with your Weekly Message for the week of January 18.

January 18 is a school holiday in recognition of the Martin Luther King Holiday. The third quarter begins Tuesday, January 19. January 19 is a Teacher Workday and Remote Learning Day for students. Students should sign in to Canvas during the day to complete work for each class. Wednesday is a normal Wellness Wednesday. Attendance will be taken for Tuesday and Wednesday by 7th period teachers using the normal Attendance Link. Students will return to Zoom classes Thursday, January 21. Middle school elective classes will switch Tuesday. New elective classes will be visible to students Monday night.

Third quarter Science Kits for grades 6, 7, and 8 available for pickup in the office beginning Tuesday. Your science teacher will let you know when you’ll need your kit for class.

We are excited to welcome NCCU athletes, Women’s Track and Field competitors ZINZILI KELLEY and TAELOR FERGUSON along with Men’s Football and Track and Field competitor XAVIER LEANER, to our  Community Circle on Wellness Wednesday, January 20, 2021 at 10:00 a.m.

Please join us to hear what strategies for success these student athletes have to share with our students at SCS.

The DPS magnet lottery is now open and will be available until February 5th on the DPS website. Current students do not have to reapply to the school but if you have siblings that you wish to attend, you must enter them into the DPS lottery and link them to the currently attending sibling. Please contact Rita.Rathbone@dpsnc.net with DPS magnet lottery questions.

The quarter has ended. Report cards will be viewable via the PowerSchool Parent Portal January 22. Report cards will not be printed. If you don’t have your Parent Portal account, we are available Monday-Friday 8:30-4:30 for you to stop by the school to pick up your Parent Portal Account information. You will need to bring your picture ID. If these hours are not convenient for you, please call the school so we can assist you with getting your Parent Portal information. You may also contact your child’s homeroom teacher for assistance.

On Friday, January 22, 2021, Strawbridge Studios will be coming to the SCS Campus to hold a “Dress to Impress” Photo Shoot for our graduating seniors.

All graduating students have been scheduled a block of time based on their last name, when they are to come to SCS to take their picture.

The directions for creating a Canvas Parent Observer Account can be found at canvas.dpsnc.net.  There you will find step-by-step written directions, a video explanation, Canvas Observer Guide and information for downloading the mobile app.  It is important that you create an observer account because some announcements will only be sent to Parent Observers and you can see your child’s activity in Canvas.

Seniors, it is still not too late for you to order your cap & gown. Visit jostens.com and select our school.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation is hosting its annual Aviation Art Contest, which is open to children ages 6-17.

Entries must be postmarked by Tuesday, January 19, 2021.

This year’s theme is “A Friendlier World with Air Sports.”  Air shows offer it all; everyone is invited to share in the joy.  While being in the sky is glamorous, it is only part of the adventure.  Every journey begins on the ground with a team of people working together to accomplish what one person alone never could.  The camaraderie created in this process is one of the things that keeps people coming back again and again.  Air sports connect people from all over the world and of all ages, and create lifelong friendships.  When the day’s adventure is over, both participants and spectators leave with new friends, as well as stories to share.

All children who live in or attend school in North Carolina are invited to grab their favorite art supplies (however pencils, including colored pencils, are prohibited) and create a poster that captures the friendlier world that comes from people meeting and sharing their love of sport aviation.  The top three entries in each age group will be forwarded to Washington, DC to be judged in the national competition.  The artwork of the national winners will be sent to Switzerland to compete in the international competition.

Need another incentive for participating in this year’s Aviation Art Contest?  In addition to the prize money listed below, the winning artwork will be displayed in the North Carolina Museum of Art!  Check it out… and be sure to watch the great video featuring last year’s contest: https://ncartmuseum.org/exhibitions/view/52597Links to an external site.

Awards for our North Carolina winners range from $25 — $225.

Check it out… and be sure to watch the great video featuring last year’s contest: https://ncartmuseum.org/exhibitions/view/52597
