Weekly Message–Weeks of November 22 & 29, 2021
Good Evening SCS Families. This is Ms. Price with your weekly message for the weeks of November 22 & 29, 2021.
School will be closed this week Wednesday, November 24-Friday, November 26 to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday.
SCS, in partnership with the Food Bank of Central & Eastern NC and Parkwood Elementary School, is hosting a Community Food Giveaway Monday, November 29 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. in the bus parking lot. This will be a drive-thru event with one meal box provided to each car. Please see the PTSA website for more information if you would like to volunteer, come by to receive a box of food, or both!
Students in grades seventh and eleventh will be taking a survey regarding school climate and the overall learning environment at our school (online) when we return from Thanksgiving. This survey will help our school learn more about the school’s climate and safety and to help make our school better align with supporting student success. Please encourage your child to take the survey seriously and answer questions honestly. Thank you for your help and support with our Student Climate Survey.
If a SCS family is interested in traveling to Italy with us during Summer 2022, the window to enroll in that trip will close at the end of December 2021. If you have questions regarding the trip being offered at this school, please contact Ms. Sims at Elizabeth_sims@dpsnc.net. There is also a link: www.eftours.com2395056zz

Durham Public Schools, in partnership with MAKO Medical, is providing weekly COVID-19 testing at our school each Tuesday to help identify possible COVID-19 infections among students even if they’re not showing any symptoms. Research has shown such testing can reduce the spread by 50%, especially in large settings such as schools.
The testing is a simple swab of the nose and not the test that tickles the brain. This is the same test families can administer from home or at local testing sites.
This is a voluntary testing process, so a parent or guardian must register their student to participate. The link to register is included in the email version of this message, posted on our website and my blog. All testing information and results will remain confidential.
I encourage our families to register their students for this free opportunity. Together, we can keep our students safe, in their classrooms, and prevent community spread.
Register your student today with this link: https://home.color.com/covid/sign-up/start?partner=tf-dur-688-students
During the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday break it is critical we don’t let our guard down when it comes to being COVID safe. While many of us are vaccinated, there are others that have yet to be or are at higher risk because of a compromised immune system. If last year is any indication, the weeks after Thanksgiving could show a significant spike in COVID spread.
I want everyone back in the building ready to learn Monday, November 29. To do that, we all must do our part to keep COVID out of our school. That means continuing to follow the 3Ws – Wear Your Mask, Wait for Space, and Wash Your Hands. And if you don’t feel well, stay home and get the rest you need. Don’t risk potentially spreading COVID to others by “powering through” your symptoms.
We can do this. I know our community can do anything we put our mind to.
I hope you have a restful, relaxing, recharging holiday break! We’ll see you back here on Monday, November 29.
Have a great evening from everyone at SCS where we practice the 4C’s–Creativity, Communication, Collaboration, and Community.
